Ahold Delhaize USA Employees Lead Earth Week Cleanup of Neponset River Estuary
April 2026 — During Earth Week, a group of nearly 40 associates from Quincy-based Ahold Delhaize USA spent their Spring Day of Service on the Neponset River Estuary with the Corporate Volunteer Program run by the Neponset River Watershed Association.
Over the course of three hours, volunteers worked along the shoreline and in the mudflats, removing accumulated debris, pulling seven tires from the estuary, and hauling out large discarded items, including a construction barrier, a rusty water heater tank, and a massive sign from the adjacent Presidents Golf Course.
As the work continued, the group steadily filled more than 80 trash bags with all types of junk, including:
- foam fragments
- milk crates
- five-gallon buckets
- mattress springs
- countless bottles, cans, nip bottles, and straws
The City of Quincy Department of Natural Resources partnered with NepRWA to assist in removing the collected debris from the site.
The volunteer group was joined by City of Quincy staff working on coastal resiliency and sustainability, along with NepRWA staff and board members, who supported the cleanup and spoke with participants about the importance of the Estuary’s 400 acres of salt marsh.
These marshes play a critical role in protecting surrounding communities from flooding and storm surge, filtering pollution, and providing habitat for a wide range of bird and fish species.
