Community Tour: Northern Extension Trail

On a sunny July weekend, members of NepRWA and the Neponset River Greenway Council led a celebratory community walk and bike ride along the Northern Extension of the Neponset River Greenway.

The 0.7-mile trail segment between Tenean Beach and Morrissey Boulevard, which unofficially opened on July 3, 2025, connects the Neponset Greenway to the Boston Harborwalk. Community members came out to enjoy the route—on foot and by bike—and learn more about its history.

On Saturday, Greenway Council President Lee Toma led a walking tour highlighting the years of advocacy that helped bring this “missing link” to life. He shared photos of the site’s transformation and described the challenges faced by DCR in building along the I-93 right-of-way.

On Sunday, Vice President Jessica Mink led a bike ride from Tenean Beach to Castle Island, with a stop at Sullivan’s for a bite to eat. Riders took in views of Savin Hill Cove, South Boston Harbor, the Boston Harbor Islands, and the Neponset River Estuary.
