Exploring the Neponset River Greenway Trail by Bike
Looking for a fun, easy way to get out and explore the Neponset River Greenway by bike?
With six convenient Bluebikes stations located right on or near the Greenway Trail, hopping on and off is a breeze—whether you’re commuting to work, enjoying a leisurely sightseeing ride, or simply getting some fresh air.
Below, you’ll find easy directions from each Bluebikes station to the closest Greenway entry, so you can start your adventure with ease.
780 Morrissey Blvd
This Bluebikes station is tucked between the Ramada Inn and 14 Freeport Street, right off of Freeport Street and Morrissey Boulevard. To access the Greenway from this stop, there is a path that leads east (towards the I-93 expressway) from the station and down to the Northern Greenway extension.
You can take a left to connect towards Morrissey Boulevard and the Boston Harborwalk, or take a right and ride down the Greenway towards Tenean Beach and beyond. Click here for location.
Pope John Paul II Park at Hallet Street
This station is located in the Hallet Street entrance of Pope John Paul II Park, just past the I-93 underpass, and gives access to the Greenway. The paths and trails within PJP Park are all a part of the Greenway, and to walk or bike down the rest of the river, exit the park underneath the Expressway and turn just before the Hilltop Street and Hallet Street intersection, left to go south (upstream) or right (downstream) on the Greenway. Butler T stop (near 22 Branchfield St, Boston, MA)
Butler T stop is located right on the Neponset River Greenway. When facing the T stop from the Bluebikes station, going left will take you downstream, and going right will take you upstream. Click here for location.
Central Ave at River Street (in front of 12 Central Ave)
Central Avenue at River Street will place you just across the River from the Greenway. From the Blue Bike station, head down towards the Central Avenue Bridge.
Just before the bridge on your left-hand side is a parking lot and an access path to the Greenway, as well as a canoe/kayak launch. Follow this path, crossing the river just before the Baker Chocolate condominiums, and you are on the Greenway! As usual, left will take you downstream and right will take you upstream. Mattapan Square (between 493 River St and Blue Hill Ave)
In order to access the Greenway from the Mattapan Square Blue Bikes station, cross River Street towards the T stop (there is an arch with the “T” logo in the center).
In front of you, there is a small tan building with a slanted roof. To go downstream on the Greenway, follow the left side of the building, and the Greenway will be right in front of you.
To go upstream on the Greenway, head across the Blue Hill Avenue Bridge past the small tan building, and cross Blue Hill Avenue at the Curtis Street intersection. Click here for location.
Truman Parkway at Fairmount Ave (in front of 678 Truman Parkway, Boston)
The last Blue Bikes station along the Greenway is located at Truman Parkway and Fairmount Avenue. This stop is across the street from the Greenway trail on the north side of Truman Parkway.
To access the Greenway, cross Truman Parkway at Fairmount Avenue. Going left will take you upstream towards Paul’s Bridge, and going right will take you downstream towards Mattapan Square. Click here for location.
